Verifying that an HVAC Company is Reputable
When you consider what’s at stake in terms of your comfort, safety and budget, it makes sense to learn all you can about an HVAC company before you hire them. HVAC systems are complicated appliances and selecting a contractor makes a difference in its performance and your satisfaction.
Credentials
Nearly all states or local jurisdictions require that an HVAC contractor has an active license that’s awarded after passing a comprehensive test. Most also require insurance and bonding to protect the consumer. Regardless of licensing requirements, be sure that the contractors you consider have liability insurance and a surety bond.
NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification indicates that contractors and technicians have met the rigorous standards of the NATE organization. NATE is a non-profit corporation in the HVAC industry that tests applicants based on advanced knowledge, performance, and customer service and satisfaction scales.
NATE certification for an HVAC company indicates that the contractor meets their stringent requirements. Technicians and contractors must participate in continuing education programs and retest every two years to keep their certification active.
Local Recognition
Local Better Business Bureaus (BBB) and the online service, Angie’s List, score local companies based on consumer satisfaction. Look for a contractor who has a high rating with the BBB and has achieved awards from Angie’s List.
The highest rating a business can achieve with the BBB is A+, and Angie’s List singles out top performers with a Super Service designation.
Customer Service
When interviewing an HVAC contractor, look for one who gives you a written bid for a project and hesitates to give estimates over the phone. If you’re interviewing a contractor for a new installation, choose one who will complete a detailed cooling and heating load for your home.
