Duct Cleaning is an Important Part of HVAC Maintenance: Make it a Priority
Duct cleaning is an important part of your HVAC maintenance that often goes overlooked by homeowners. In fact, there is some debate on whether you should clean your ducts regularly. The EPA, however, suggests waiting until the need arises to clean your ductwork. Debris, fungus growth and vermin are three common problems that the EPA says can require duct cleaning.
Debris naturally begins to buildup in the ducts overtime. When the ducts have an excessive amount of debris buildup, it can negatively affect your indoor air quality, which has a direct link to your overall health and well-being.
Mold and mildew are the two fungal growths that will begin to form when the ducts have a high amount of moisture in them. These problematic pathogens will release spores into the air that can aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms while filling your home with an unpleasant musty odor.
Vermin infestation — be it insects, rodents or the like — contaminate the ducts with bacteria, debris, odor and feces. When your heating and cooling system kicks on, the forced air will push the airborne contaminates through your registers and into the home. When your ducts develop one of these three problems, it is typically a sign you have an underlying problem that will require immediate attention. If, for example, you have fungus growing in your ducts, simply performing a duct cleaning will not stop the fungus from returning.
You must also address the excessive moisture problem or the fungus will continue to grow. Hiring a trusted HVAC company to perform your duct cleaning is essential to ensure it is done right. Once your ducts are cleaned, replace the air filters monthly and consider signing a preventive maintenance agreement to help keep your heating and cooling system properly maintained. These two simple steps increase your HVAC unit’s energy efficiency and prolongs the life of the system.
