Tips on How to Troubleshoot Toilet Problems You May Face
Toilet problems can be a real hassle for homeowners, especially since they often occur at the most inopportune times. Here are some tips to help you troubleshoot toilet problems.
Toilet Won’t Flush Completely
A toilet that needs multiple flushes to completely clear the bowl is an annoyance. There are a few things that may be happening to cause this problem.
- Check inside the tank to see if the chain that connects the flapper cap to the handle is the right length. If it’s too long, it won’t be able to lift the cap. You can shorten the chain by using a different link to connect the two.
- Make sure the tank is filling up with water completely. If it’s not, jiggle the float valve a bit.
- If it still doesn’t fill with water completely, clean the holes under the rim of the toilet to make sure they aren’t blocked. You can use a mirror to check. If none of these solutions work, it may be time to call the experts out for an opinion.
Toilet Won’t Stop Running
A toilet that constantly runs is a waste of money, and the noise may drive you insane. Check the flapper valve, making sure that it seals well. Sometimes the chain will be too short, causing it to stay partially open all the time.
Your Toilet Is About to Overflow
Quickly open the tank and pull the fill valve bulb up. This will stop the tank from filling. Contact a plumbing professional to fix the issue.
Water Is Dripping
From the Tank If water is dripping, you may have a crack in the tank. To troubleshoot toilet problems like this one, add food coloring to the water in the tank. If you see the colored water on the floor, you should get an expert to test for leaks.
